The fishing squads had meals below the trees, the fragrant aroma of fresh fish being prepared in sizable containers, motivated residents to bargain for the remnant batter-fried seafood. A local business person started serving up tubfuls of deep-fried seafood that had been dipped in a light seasoned concoction,that was batter-fried golden brown, and catered really red-hot. “Calabash Style” seafood was given birth- conjuring up his formula with the picture of monolithic amounts and assortments of seafood. The open air meals were the beginning of a number of eating places that are still serving prime seafood fresh off the docks. Hush puppies come with every meal. Made from Cornmeal, flour, eggs, sugar or maybe even a Sun Drop or sweet milk, then flavored with a chopped onion, and lastly gently spooned in hot oil and deep-fried to a golden brown! They often contact the table before your chair is warm.
Calabash is part of a 48,000-acre grant made to Landgrave Thomas Smith in 1691. Originally the area was considered to be part of Little River and until 1735 it was reasoned to be part of South Carolina. Early settlers to the area arrived from New England and Charleston, SC. Today Calabash is surrounded by 6 beautiful golf courses along with a number of quaint shopping areas.
Calabash is an Indian word for a type of gourd. It has about 1 seafood restaurant for every 10 occupants. From the 1940′s to the 1960′s Calabash’s fame accumulated locally and restaurant after restaurant opened. Sizable gatherings from nearby Myrtle Beach were streaming into the community every night to acquire a taste of Calabash. Not long after national attention ensued and eateries from all over the nation began to sport the world famous Calabash style seafood.
